Rescue Cat: 70 Cats Found In One Room Talk About Their Time In A Pennsylvania Boarding House

Carol Molina lives with 75 cats, and she’s rescuing 70 more.

Carol Molina cried when she saw a woman and 70 cats living together in a room at a boarding house.

They had no room to move, she claimed, “not a square foot among them.” Ten people were sharing one chair while some were inside an aquarium. I was unable to breathe.

She claimed that because they were all underweight, they all required spaying or neutering.

Molina’s job is to save cats. She started York’s Feline Solutions in 2008, and in 2015, she says, she became a non-profit. She receives assistance from about 15 volunteers as well as her family, who resides in the home where the cats she can’t immediately place. She actually has about 75 cats in her clean house right now, some of which are her own and the rest of which are just passing through till they can be adopted.

The boarding house she visited is located a few hours west of York, but due to the issues — mental illness, hoarding, and a possible eviction — Molina didn’t want to reveal anything about the residence or the woman residing there.

Her responsibility is to help animals, not to regulate cat owners.

She rescued ten cats from the boarding house last week, and this week she will go back for more.

This is taking place all over, she remarked. And things will only get worse.

She claimed to have saved cats from “all over the world,” including the Middle East, where she had taken in more than 700 cats from Egypt alone. The cats must go through a difficult customs procedure before entering the nation.

She declared, “I am the voice of the cats.”

In that vein, she is concerned about how cats are treated and the laws that, in her opinion, have left some animals behind. Out of displeasure with the York County SPCA’s policy that sends rescued cats back outside, she recently met with Republican state representative Seth Grove of York. Molina disagrees with the policy since it is part of a push to adopt one that is supported by Best Friends, a nonprofit organization whose objective is for all shelters to become no-kill facilities by 2025. Her responsibility is to help animals, not to regulate cat owners.

We’re going to have rooftop cats and 200 to 300,000 feral cats roaming about York. It’s going to be a catastrophe, pardon the pun, added Molina.

The local SPCA executive director, Steven Martinez, said he implemented a no-kill policy around three years ago to preserve more cats, but some members of the community, such as Feline Solutions, disagree with the change.

“It used to be, you saw a stray animal in the community, a person would bring it to the shelter, but an outdoor, free roaming cat is never going to be a candidate for adoption,” Martinez said. The local SPCA euthanized many of those animals. In fact, the non-profit’s survival rate for cats was about 50 percent. Cat

Now, the SPCA is spay/neutering those felines and returning the healthy feral ones to live outside; a few of the cat rescues, like Feline Solutions, have pushed back on that practice.

“Yes, the winters get cold, but (cats) have done it for thousands of years,” Martinez said. “You’re putting cats outside in the cold, and yes, they’re surviving, they’re thriving.”

Previous policies haven’t worked, but this one has, he said, and the SPCA has been tracking those numbers. He isn’t prepared to share the data yet but will provide it to the community soon.

Molina disagrees, though.

“You cannot introduce a cat into an existing colony. They’ll abuse them. They’ll murder them. She responded, “They won’t allow them to have food or water. Why, then, would the SPCA approve of leaving these cats outside when it knows they won’t receive food or care from a shelter?

TNR, or “trap, neuter, and return,” is a policy that requires cats to be returned to the location where they were found so that they can get to know the colony that already lives there.

Rep. Grove has been tasked by Molina to find a location where towns can put their cats in their place. She is concerned about the chilly weather and the cats’ search for a warm spot to sleep.

I’m prepared for the heartbreak this winter, she remarked.

One of the biggest in the state, according to Martinez, is his SPCA.

The difference between a shelter and a rescue, according to him, is that the latter considers each individual animal. Shelters must think about the community as a whole while trying to sterilize as many feral cats as possible. This will help reduce the number of cats in the area.
